Description
Cork oak trees grow in Japan, China, and Korea. As a characteristic of these trees, they develop cork on branches. They grow well in a dry place facing the south or in a rocky place. In particular, many of them are growing in Gangwon-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do. The bark of this tree is used as cork, and the fruits are used for making jelly. The Cork oak tree in Uljin is about 300 years old, with height of 20m and girth of 5.94m. In 1959, Typhoon Sarah broke off its southward branches and damaged the trunk. Thus, it now looks weak. According to tradition, this tree was planted by the great Buddhist "Uisang" and the tree is said to have offered refuge to the king when he was fleeing from the enemy’s forces. Since the Cork oak tree in Uljin has been under our ancestors' care and protection and is biologically and historically valuable, it is designated and protected as a natural monument.
