Description

Red-wood evergreen oaks belong to the family of Fagaceae. Its Korean name is Bukgasi namu (meaning red thorny tree) because it is red and hard. It is weak in cold weather, usually growing in sunny places at the foot of a mountain or a valley. Since this tree hardly splits and keeps anything warm, it is usually used for making furniture or ships. This tree usually grows in Jejudo Island and southern coastal areas. In the mainland of Korea, Daedong-myeon, Hampyeong-gun, Jeollanam-do is the northernmost distributional border of Red-wood evergreen oaks. Therefore, it is designated and protected as a natural monument.
