Description
The Fossil Site of Petrified Tree Fern on Geummubong Peak, Chilgok is situated about 4km southeast of Waegwan-eup. The Petrified Tree Fern on Geummubong Peak is similar to Gosari (Bracken), which flourished around here approximately 130 million years ago. Since its leaves are like those of brackens, but it has trunk and branches, it is called "Namugosari(Bracken tree)". The tree fern grows naturally in the tropical region such as the southwestern region in Japan, Taiwan, and southern region in China; it is found in Korea only as fossil form. The tree fern in Korea is biologically valuable since its trunk is very different from that of tree fern growing naturally in the tropical region.
