Description

The Black Pine has tough leaves. Normally, the winter buds of a pine are red, whereas those of the Japanese Black Pine are grey-white. The Japanese Black Pine resists the sea wind and grows along the south coast. Therefore, the Japanese Black Pine is called haesong, meaning a sea pine. Since the bark of the Japanese Black Pine is black, this tree is also called heuksong, meaning a black pine. The Japanese Black Pine in Jeju-do is about 500~600 years old, with height of about 29.7m and girth of approximately 4.35m. This pine tree is designated as a natural monument. In addition, there are 8 other Japanese Black Pines in Jeju-do. Japanese Hackberry, Yedeok tree, etc., are found around the Japanese Black Pines. Since the olden times, the people of Jeju-do have performed a ceremony on Baengnokdam Crater Lake in Hallasan Mountain. When the weather is bad, they held a ceremony at Sancheondan Altar where the pine grows. The villagers believe that the Japanese Black Pine is a connection between the gods and people. Therefore, the Japanese Black Pine is considered a sacred tree. Villagers pray to this tree for their peace and prosperity. The Japanese Black Pine in Jeju-do has been kept well by our ancestors for a long time. Biologically valuable, it is designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
