Description

The Shell Tracksite on Seogwipo Formation is found on the cliff along the seashore in Seogwipo-si. This formation consists of marine sediments, and its surface is covered with basalt. Many shell fossils and animal fossils are found in the boulders of the formation, which is assumed to have been developed about 2 ~ 3 million years ago. The 100-meter high land had been clipped by waves. It is the reason this formation was discovered. Most kinds of fossil animals in this formation still live in the southern sea, indicating that Seogwipo Sea used to be warmer than it is today. The Shell Fossils in Seogwipo Formation has been designated and protected as a natural monument, because it is highly valuable for research on the ecosystem and environment as to how they were formed.
