Description

An egret lives widely in the tropical and temperate regions and in all areas in Korea except the highland in Baekdusan Mountain. It reproduces in Korea from early spring to late autumn, and it can be seen in streams, lakes, and tideland. It reproduces mainly in a pine tree and a ginkgo tree. The grey heron is the biggest bird in the white heron family, reproducing in all areas in Korea in summer. A small group of herons spend winter in the southern region and island region. It lives in a rice field, a stream, a coast, and a tideland and feeds on frogs, fish, and snakes. An egret and the grey heron had lived in Sinjeop-ri, Yeoju for about 50 years and reproduced mainly on a ginkgo tree that is 400 years old. Since the tree died 40 years ago, they have lived on a black oak. Unfortunately, since the tree also died 8 years ago, villagers planted acacias and pine trees and made them live on these trees. The egret and the grey heron habitat in Sinjeop-ri are the representative ones in the central region and are highly valued academically. Therefore, they are designated and protected as a natural monument.
