Description
The Chinese juniper grows on Ulleungdo Island, in the mid-southern part of Korea, and in Japan. With its strong scent, this tree is used as incense in ceremonies. This tree is often planted in the garden or in the park. The Chinese juniper at Seonnongdan Altar in Yongdu-dong is assumed to be about 500 years old, with height of about 13.1m and girth of approximately 2.28m. The Seonnongdan Altar was built during the Joseon dynasty, and a king performed a ceremony to the deities of agriculture, Sinnong, and Hujik for rich harvests. There are only a few stones and this Chinese juniper in this place. The Chinese juniper at Seonnongdan Altar in Yongdu-dong, Seoul has been kept well for a long time. Biologically valuable, it is designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
