Description
The Spreading Yews are called "Hwasolnamu," distributed in Korea, Japan, Manchuria, Usuri, and Russia. These trees normally grow in the high mountain area but rarely grows together in one place. The Population of Spreading Yews in Sobaeksan Mountain is located west of the mountain. The top of Birobong Peak is made up of grass, and about 100-year-old Yews are growing together. It is characterized by their twisted trunks and strangely shaped side branches winding up and down. The height of most trees is 7m, and girth is irregular. However, the branches extend down everywhere from 2m of the tree, because of strong wind and snow. In the neighborhood, cherry trees, hazel trees, and Mongolian oak trees are growing, with a thriving community of Megaleranthis saniculifolia ohwi near a ridgeline. The Population of Spreading Yews in Sobaeksan Mountain is designated and protected as a Natural Monument because it is a natural growing site of rare trees and is valuable in scientific research.
