Description

Migratory birds change their breeding or living site according to season. The winter birds breed in the north regions and winter in Korea. The summer birds live from spring until fall in Korea, and then fly to the southern regions. Among migratory birds, there are wandering birds. The migrants breed in Siberia, East China, and Manchuria and, via Korea, winter from South Japan to Australia. The representatives of those kinds in Korea are summer migrants such as cuckoos, egrets, broad-billed rollers, etc., and winter migrants such as wild geese, eagles, cranes, owls, etc. The sanctuary of the birds in Cheontong-ri, Cheolwon has turned into grass fields because the site has been left alone since the Korean War’s truce. The site has been a resting place for wild animals. After many kinds of birds breed in Northeast Siberia, they migrate here to winter during the middle of September and middle of October. In winter, some species of eagles are sometimes found there. According to one report, Cranes and White-naped Cranes have been found since 1970. In another report, White-naped Cranes and Hooded Cranes winter in Japan and, via this site, migrate to the north regions. The sanctuary of migratory birds in Cheontong-ri, Cheolwon is a site for studying the development of the ecosystem. With its biological, educational, and emotional values, it is designated as a Natural Monument.
