Description

Since the bark of this tree is black, it is called "black pine." The black pine has thicker leaves than a pine tree. Normally, the winter buds of a pine are red, but those of the black pine are grey-white. The tree resists the sea wind and grows along the south coast. Therefore, the black pine is also called "sea pine." The black pine at Jwasuyeong Fortress Site is assumed to be about 400 years old, with height of about 23.6m and girth of 4.5m. According to folk legend, there was Jwasuyeong (a naval base of Joseon) near this tree, and the soldiers considered it sacred, so they believed that the tree would protect them. The soldiers prayed to this tree for good luck in battle. Around this tree are a house where a local god is enshrined, a guardian post, and another black pine tree. The Black Pine at Jwasuyeong Fortress Site, Busan has been preserved well by descendants up to now. Ethnically and culturally valuable, it is designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
