Description
Distributed in Japan, China, and Korea, the ginkgo tree was introduced along with Confucianism and Buddhism from China. The tree has beautiful leaves in autumn, undamaged by harmful insects, and provides large, cool shade. Therefore, it is planted often as arbor or roadside tree. The ginkgo tree of Joryong-ri, Geumneung is presumed to be about 440 years old. It is located in the Seomgyeseowon Confucian Academy. The Seomgyeseowon was built to hold a sacrificial ritual for Kim Mun-gi, who was a minister during the reign of King Sejong of the Joseon Dynasty (1802), and the ginkgo tree seems to have been planted at that time. Since the ginkgo tree of Joryong-ri, Geumneung is biologically valuable and has thrived under the attention and care of our ancestors for a long time, it is designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
