Description
A ginkgo tree can be as old as a fossil. Distributed in Japan, China, and Korea, the tree was introduced along with Confucianism and Buddhism from China. The tree has beautiful leaves in autumn, undamaged by harmful insects, and provides large, cool shade. Therefore, it is planted often as arbor or roadside tree. The ginkgo tree of Boreumdo Island is about 800 years old, with height of 24m and girth of 8.96m. It is located on the hill of the village and serves as a resting place. The tree was worshipped by the local community as a village guardian Villagers believed that the person will be punished if he burns down the branches of the ginkgo tree. Until 1950s, people in the village held a sacrificial ritual. Since the ginkgo tree in Boreumdo-ri, Ganghwa is biologically valuable and has been preserved well by our ancestors for a long time, it is designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
