Description

The Muku Tree grows in the warm region from the west coast to Gyeonggi-do. It can withstand the salt wind from the sea along with Black Pine and Japanese Hackberry. Therefore, it is planted as windbreak. Similar to Paengnamu (Japanese Hackberry), it is sometimes called Gaepaengnamu or Geompaengnamu. The muku tree at Jwasuyeong Fortress Site, Busan is about 500 years old, with height of 1.08m and girth of 8.5m. The tree is tilted to one side in general and its branches have the vestiges of scars and lots of lumps. Even though the tip of its branches is dead, overall, it looks stately. The origin of the tree is unknown while the tree has long been worshipped by the local community as a village guardian. Villagers believe that they do not get hurt even if they fall down from the tree since a grandmother’s spirit dwells in the tree. The muku tree at Jwasuyeong Fortress Site is biologically valuable and has been preserved well by our ancestors for a long time. Therefore, it is designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
