Description

A firefly, which belongs to Family Lampyridae, emits light at the end of its belly and it produces short, rhythmic flashes in a pattern characteristic of the species. This flash is known as a part of a signal system that seeks to mate. There are two species in this inhabit. One is Luciola lateralis Motshulsky. As a larva, it lives in water hunting marsh snails. The other is Lynchnuris rufa, which larva lives in damp grass eating snails and slugs. In Seolcheon-myeon, there is a stream, 18~25m wide. That provides good conditions for snails and slugs to live, so there are also lots of fireflies here. Firefly, a luminous insect, is biologically valuable and is in danger of extinction because of water pollution. Therefore, habitat of fireflies and their prey, Muju is designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
