Description
Sasudo Island is 20km away from Chujado Island and its coast is mostly composed of rock walls. On the island, nine kinds of evergreen trees such as Camellia and Machilus have grown together. Black Wood Pigeon builds nests, whereas Streaked Shearwaters breed under the trees. Found in South Japan, China, and Korea, the Black Wood Pigeon is about 40cm long. Its feathers are lustrous dark in general. Its bill is dark-grey, and its legs are red. The bird lives in the Machilus forest and it mainly feeds on fruit. A Streaked Shearwater breeds in Japan, coast of China, and Korea and migrates to the Philippines in winter. It is about 48cm long; its head and back are dark grey, and its face, neck, and belly are white. It has lots of white spots on the head, and its bill is white-grey. The birds live in a group over the sea far off the coast during the day and fly back to their breeding ground in the evening. They lay eggs on the cliffs along the coast or on the plain of the inner island and the bird feeds on fish, squids, and seaweeds. Since the Breeding Ground of Sea Birds is biologically valuable, it is designated and protected as a Natural Monument .
