Description
Billemotdonggul Lava Tube is at the mid-slope of the mountain in Eoeum-ri. The name Billemot is a combination of Bille meaning a flat stone in Jeju language and Mot meaning ponds in Korean. These are around the cave, which is 11,749m long, the longest cave in the world. This cave is assumed to have been formed 70,000-80,000 years ago by the volcanic activity of Hallasan Mountain. In this cave are stone pillar up to 7m long and hardened lava shaped like a ball with height of up to 2.5m, including the world’s second largest lava stalagmite up to 68cm high. Also on the wall inside the cave are tracks of lava that hardened as it cooled. Since the Billemotdonggul Lava Tube is the longest cave in the world and is home to the second largest lava stalagmite in the world, it is designated and conserved as a Natural Monument
