Description
Jeju Horse is often called Jorangmal of Jejudo Island. The female is about 117cm long, and the male is about 115cm long. The horse is meek, with good resistance to disease and it is also called Gwahama or Toma. Gwahama means the horse that is short so it can go under the fruit trees. Though most Jeju Horses are brown, some are dark-brown, grey, and black. The rear of the horse is higher than its shoulder so its back is slightly sloped with a long waist. This horse is smaller than other breeds of horses. According to records, the Yuan Dynasty set up ranches in Jeju where the Mongolian horses were raised in 1276 (the reign of King Wonjong). The Jeju Horse of Jejudo Island was used for agriculture, and the number of horses used to be approximately 20,000, but the number of horses has decreased remarkably. To preserve this breed, the Jeju horse is designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
