Description
Nut-bearing torreya trees are found in the southern part of Korea. These trees can grow to about 25 meters tall. Its leaves are thick, small, and sharply pointed, blooming in spring and bearing long and round seeds in fall. The habitat of the trees is located 6km away from Pyeongdae-ri. In this region, 2,570 Nut-bearing torreya trees are growing. These trees are about 300 - 600 years old. Historians are surmising that villagers held sacrificial rites, had scattered the used seeds of the tree all around this place after the rites, and the seeds rooted the area to form a forest. This Forest of Nut-bearing torreya is one of the largest forests of the tree in the world. Therefore, it has been designated and conserved as a Natural Monument for its scientific value.
