Description

Growing in warm areas such as temperate and subtropical regions, zelkova is distributed in Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and China. Its flowers bloom in May, and its fruit, which is disk-shaped, gets ripe in October. This saw-leaf zelkova serves as a shady resting place and it has long been worshipped by the local community as a village guardian. This saw-leaf zelkovas in Oga-ri are situated in Uryeong Village, consisting of three little trees; the upper one is 30m high and 7.66m wide, the lower one is 20.4m high and 9.24m wide, and a small tree beside the first two is about 15m high. The lower tree has three central branches, one among them was broken and has been dead a long time ago, and there is a hole in it. The upper tree is situated 60 meters to the north from the tree in the lower one. The former is located in a high land, growing well compared to the latter. On the 15th of the New Year, villagers gather together under the tree in the lower part and offer a rite. Saw-leaf Zelkovas of Oga-ri, Goesan has lived under the attention and care of our ancestors.
