Description

The walnut tree was introduced from China and it doesn’t survive well under shaded places. It grows in southern regions from Hwanghae-do in Korea and reaches a height of 20m. It blooms between April and May and bears round nuts that ripen in September. The walnut tree at Gwangdeoksa Temple in Cheonan is about 400 years old, with height of 18.2m. Though it bore traces of a surgical operation, the condition of the tree is quite good. The stele of "The Place of the walnut tree planted by Yu Cheong-sin" stands in front of the walnut tree, and it is related to the legend of the tree. Yu Cheong-sin, also called Yeongmilgong, went to the Yuan Empire in September in the 16th year (1290) of the reign of King Chungnyeol in Goryeo and, when he came back, brought a walnut sapling and a fruit. After that, he planted the sapling in Gwangdeoksa Temple. The walnut tree at Gwangdeoksa Temple in Cheonan is designated and protected as a Natural Monument for its great value as biological history material.
