Description
Chinese catawba is often planted as an arbor. It has broad, oval leaves and pale yellow flowers that bloom in summer. The fruit, which ripens in October, has several rooms hoarding seeds. The Chinese Catawbas in Hongwon-ri, Cheongsong consist of three separate trees and are about 300 years old. The tallest is 10.6m tall with girth of about 3.88m. They stand at the entrance of the village. Although there is no special legend regarding these trees, the villagers perform a ceremony for their peace and rich harvest every January 15 by the lunar calendar. The Chinese Catawbas in Hongwon-ri, Cheongsong are large old trees, thus, designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
