Description

Water spiders all around the world belong to one species. They live in Korea, Japan, China, Europe, Siberia, and Central Asia. While regular female spiders are much bigger than the male ones, male water spiders are 7-15mm bigger than the female ones. On their body, they have lots of hairs that make an air pocket, which allows them to breathe. These hairs also keep them from getting wet underwater. They attach the air pocket on grass or small gravels in water and live in it. They live underwater for their whole life, which spans one year. Water spiders have unique lifestyle and high scientific value. Since the Water Spider Habitat in Eundae-ri, Yeoncheon is the onlybreeding place of water spider in Korea, it is designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
