Description

A columnar joint means the rock divided into many stone pillars when the variation of pressure was caused by crustal movements, weathering, and erosion. It is formed by magma that pierces the surface of the rock through a crack on it. The columnar joint in Daljeon-ri, Pohang was discovered at an old stone quarry and is composed of basalts extruded in the Cenozoic era. It has height of 20 meters and length of approximately 100 meters. The cross section of this stone is mostly hexagonal, and the stone pillars slope 80 degrees. This is because magma turned its direction horizontally on the earth surface when it welled up from underground. The Jusangjeolli in Daljeon-ri, Pohang has been well developed and is bent into a particular direction. It is very valuable as a workbook of nature. Therefore, it has been designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
