Description

The black-faced spoonbill seeks prey with its bill shaped like a spoon rolling from side to side. This bird is rare all over the world. Found among southern area in Ganghwado Island, Seongmodo Island, and Boleumdo Island, the tidal flat has been preserved well and is valuable economically, environmentally, and as treasury of the ocean ecosystem. In addition, migrant birds that breed in Siberia and Alaska rest in the silt, while migrating to Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. As the habitat of the Blackfaced spoonbill, Ganghwa silt is designated and protected as a Natural Monument.
