Description
The Jeongdongjin Marine Terrace in Gangneung is believed to have formed due to ground uplift during the late Tertiary period, with the terrace strata formed 2 - 2.5 million years ago. The presence of a steep, weathered cliff at the point where this coastal terrace meets the sea means that the bedrock of this area is mostly sandstone, and that the cliff has long been eroded by waves. In addition, there are many deep valleys toward the East Sea, also formed by erosion. The Jeongdongjin Marine Terrace shows that, 2-2.5 million years ago, the sea level of the Korean landmass was about 80m higher than it is today, and that it went down as a result of later uplift activity. This terrace, along with the weathered cliffs and the sedimentary layer on the flat top of the terrace, is very important in studying the formation of Korea’s geological structure and sedimentary environment, diastrophism, coastal erosion, and changes in sea level.
