Description
A karst region is found in the limestone zone of the Cambro-Ordovician Joseon Supergroup on the Korean Peninsula. The major karst is that in Baekbongnyeong Pass and is significant for its location on the Baekdudaegan Mountain Range. The region is dotted with dolines and poljes, which are characteristic of karst landscapes. Most of the dolines are wide and shallow, with size ranging from a few meters to tens of meters wide. Around the northern ridge in Gamok-ri, Imgye-myeon are some 50 dolines. In this karst landscape, flowing water or rainwater is believed to seep into the ground through the dolines and emerge in the Sangye-ri district to form the water in streams and springs. Unlike other karst regions in Korea, which are used for cultivation, the Karst of Baekbongnyeong Pass is covered with natural vegetation. Since there is a limestone mine in the area, however, the area is vulnerable to damage. The Karst of Baekbongnyeong Pass shows specific geological characteristics in concentrated form over a fixed area; for this reason, it is important for academic study and as a place for studying nature.
