Description
Black pine is called as heuksong because of its dark bark. Since it commonly grows in coastal areas, it is also known as haesong (sea pine). The black pine in Susan-ri, Jeju stands beside the south reservoir of Susanbong Peak at the entrance to the village. It is presumed to be 400 years old, with height of 12.5m and branches spreading 24.5m across. When the top of the tree is covered in snow, it looks like a white bear drinking water. As a village guardian, black pine of Susan-ri has been preserved well by the residents and is deemed to be of great cultural importance. Therefore, it is designated and protected as a Natural Monument No. 8.
