Description
Bubusong literally means “husband and wife pine trees,” and this is the name of a pair of weeping pine trees estimated to be over 300 years old. The trees stand side by side on the slope of a low hill and appear to be embracing each other, looking like one tree from afar. They are very beautiful; seen either from the north or the south, they seem to cover the entire slope. As a kind of weeping pine, the trees were originally known as the weeping pines of Jikdu-ri, Pocheon; wanting to commemorate the designation of the trees as a Natural Monument and generate awareness among local residents regarding their protection, however, the city of Pocheon held a naming competition. As a result, the name Bubusong Pine Trees was chosen because the trees indeed look like a couple locked in a warm embrace. Local legend has it that, during the period of the Japanese colonial rule, the Japanese cut off ten branches from the tree, considered to be a divine spirit, as a way to cut off the vital energy of Pocheon. Today, the tree is still sought out by shamans as a place of prayer.
