Description

The cork oak tree is a common deciduous tree that grows anywhere southern part of Korea. Its height reaches about 25m, and its waist height circumference, 3.5m. The cork oak grove in Okgye-myeon has 12 trees with girth of longer than 2m. The biggest tree in the group has size and appearance representative of the species (height: 30.5m; girth: 5.27m; tree crown: 28m east to west, 28.9m north to south), and the other 11 trees (girth: 2.0-4.38m) are also well-maintained. Planted at the entrance of a mountain village in Gangwon-do, this grove of cork oak trees forms a sacred forest where local religious rites were held. Thus, it has great significance in terms of traditional culture and history and rightfully deserves to be designated as a Natural Monument.
