Description

The Forest of Maple Trees at Munsusa Temple, Gochang consists of some 500 trees ranging from 100 to 400 years and lining the 80m road from the entrance of Munsusan Mountain to Munsusa Temple mid-slope of the mountain. The trees in this forest are around 10-15m high with breast-high circumference of 30-80cm; in addition, there are several old trees with larger breast circumference ranging from 2m to over 2.96m. Beside the maples trees, there are many old trees of other species such as Yeddo Hornbeams and Japanese Hackberries. This forest of maple trees is protected as an important part of Munsusa Temple, built in 644 (4th year of the reign of King Uija of Baekje). As Korea’s major maple tree forest, it is designated as a Natural Monument.The tree is a famous tourist attraction in autumn when the leaves change color, creating spectacular mountain scenery.
