Description

The Ash Tree standing at the entrance to the village of Jeongok-ri in Seosin-myeon, Hwaseong, Gyeonggi-do is presumed to be 350 years old, with height of 20m and girth of 4.68m. It is unusually big for an ash tree and has a beautiful posture. The ash tree is a tall tree commonly found in Korea. Since the wood is solid, it has been widely used for all kinds of woodworking including agricultural equipment and household items; the bark is used in herbal medicines such as digestives or anti-inflammatory remedies. Although the tree can grow taller, most of those seen in Korea are rather small. Before the Korean War broke out in 1950, the ash tree had long been worshipped by the local community as a village guardian and they used to hold rituals such as a ritual for rain. Therefore, it is historically valuable.
