Description

The Precambrian is a far-removed geological era, predating the Paleozoic Era. Precambrian rocks have been subjected to severe metamorphic changes and, for this reason, have rarely retained their original structures. The Precambrian strata in Maldo Island at Okdo-myeon, Gunsan, are an exception to the rule, as sedimentary structures, including ripple marks and tilted strata, have survived through time intact in spite of heavy metamorphic changes and deformation they have undergone. These Precambrian strata are deemed invaluable, as structural studies can shed important light on the sedimentary environment of this era. These strata are also interesting for the various structures formed through crustal movement they contain. A great variety of geological folds are observable, along with other various secondary structures, resulting from the fold process. Some of these folds include structures that are very rarely seen in the Korean peninsula (ie. thrust duplex and superposed folds created through several successive stages of deformation). Their state of preservation is excellent as well. The wealth of geological features these strata comprise make them unique among other Precambrian strata found in Korea.
