Description

This tree is amongst the largest as well as oldest bead trees in Korea and is located at a higher latitude than most other bead trees. Aside from the obvious scientific value, the ancient tree also retains a cultural significance as bead trees had long been part of the living environment of Korean people in traditional times. Famers used nectar from bead trees as an insecticide. The fruits were used to make medicines as well as prayer beads, and the wood to make simple contraptions needed around the house. Bead trees, mentioned also in a poem by Dasan Jeong Yak-yong, were widely planted and grown in southern Korea and were a familiar element in the daily environment of Koreans of yore.
