Description

The rock formation in Donggeochado Island appears to be an orbicular peperite, formed by the mixing of silicic or acid magma, rising to the earth’s crust, through a network of dykes, with volcanic ash. Peperites occur when there is sedimentation, concurrently with igneous activity (more particularly, magma intrusion or lava extrusion), and are very helpful for the interpretation and timing of geological processes that took place in the past. This orbicular peperite at Donggeochado Island of Jindo-gun is formed by a silicic dyke, in the shape of a nodule, getting detached from the rest of the rock mass. It can, therefore, offer important clues for the interpretation of the formation of silicic peperites.
