Description
Muljangorioreum is one of the volcanic cones on Hallasan Mountain. As rainwater collects on the muddy bottom of the crater all year round, various living organisms have made their habitat in this volcanic cone. Such plants as white peony, gastrodia, rush, and bulrush usually live in the marshy area within the volcanic cone, while Yeddo hornbeam, cherry tree, and macrophylla live in the surrounding forests, forming the typical habitat of deciduous broadleaf trees. This volcanic cone is considered a sacred place of Jeju, along with Hallasan Mountain and Yeongsilgiam Cliff. Records about rain rituals can still be seen on the podium around the marsh. The marsh within the volcanic cone never dries out all year round and has abundant water, so village people used to perform a ritual for rain during the times of drought. In that sense, this volcanic cone has great cultural value. This volcanic cone also has considerable geological and topographical value, because water collects in the bottom of the marsh, as well as rare ecological value because Jeju’s rare plants such as Insularis and wild peony trees, and natural monuments such as peregrine falcon and fairy pitta, inhabit the marsh.
