Description
The Population of Red Leaf Willows in Chunghyo-dong, Gwangju was established as a symbolic forest of the nearby village in an attempt to compensate certain geographical defects in accordance with feng shui principles. This forest has important historical and cultural value as there are a number of folk tales related to this forest. For example, the forest is also referred to as “The trees of Kim Deok-ryeong,” as it is thought to have been planted to commemorate Kim Deok-ryeong, the leader of a righteous army during the Japanese invasion of the late 16th century. Given the age of the trees and its extent, this forest is superior to other red leaf willows designated as natural monuments, and also has considerable botanical significance as the overall shape and form of the trees are well preserved.
