Description
Pillow lava is created when lava reaches cold water and cools very quickly, forming a surface of round pillow shapes. Auraji pillow lava was formed when lava erupted from Orisan Mountain, Pyeonggang, North Korea, and lava flowed along the Hantangang River towards the junction of the Yeongpyeongcheon Stream and the Hantangang River. This type of phenomenon is very rarely found on the Korean Peninsula. The pillow lava creates an unusual scenic beauty, and is important to geological and topographical researches as it includes diverse geological features including metamorphic rocks of the Pre-Cambrian Period, unconformity inferred within basalt lava, columnar joints, river cliffs, and ancient soil layers.
