Description

Yongso Cave, whose name literally means ‘a cave where a dragon lives,’ is located in Baekjeon-ri, Hwaam-myeon, Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon-do. This underwater cave was designated as Natural Monument No. 549 in recognition of its great natural heritage value after a basic scientific investigation was conducted in 2013 with the aim of getting it registered as a cultural heritage. It is a great source of information about groundwater flow in the limestone area and the formation of limestone caves. In addition, it is the longest underwater cave so far identified in Korea, with about 250m-long passages and a water depth of 50m, based on the investigation section, and is inhabited by diverse species including salamanders and fish.
