Description
According to various ancient records including Samgukji wiji dongijeon (Records of the Three Kingdoms – Book of Wei, 285 AD), Tamnaji (Record of Tamna, 1651-1653), Seongho saseol (Treatises on Practical Topics by Yi Ik, 1681-1763) and Haedong yeoksa (History of Korea, 1823), Jeju black pigs have been raised on Jejudo Island, Korea since ancient times. Jeju’s black pigs are not only a valuable historical resource but also a cultural material strongly associated with Jeju’s lifestyle, folklore, and beliefs. From a biological point of view, Jeju black pigs adapt well to Jeju’s unique climate and natural features as they have a strong constitution and are highly disease resistant, distinguishing them from those raised on mainland Korea. Since 1986, the Jeju Livestock Promotion Institute has preserved and controlled Jeju’s renowned black pigs under a project aimed at restoring Jeju black pigs, which have been designated as Natural Monument No. 550 in a bid to protect this endangered species and secure national genetic resources.
