Description

This painting album contains Haeak palgyeong (Eight Scenic Views of Seas and Mountains) and Songyu palhyeondo (Eight Confucian Scholars of the Song Dynasty) painted by Jeong Seon, a notable painter of the late Joseon Period. This album includes eight true-view landscape paintings depicting scenes from Geumgangsan Mountain and eight narrative figure paintings of eight Confucian scholars of the Song Dynasty, displaying the painter’s masterly style and bold compositions. Based on the painting style and the seals stamped on them, these paintings are presumed to have been produced in the late 1740s when Jeong Seon was in his seventies. Though all these paintings are small, the landscape paintings vividly express the scenic beauty of the natural environment, while the narrative figure paintings depict renowned scholars against a backdrop of mountains and rivers. During the Joseon Period, narrative figure paintings usually depicted Confucian sages and hermits from all periods rather than any specific period. But, interestingly, the paintings in this album focus on scholars only from the Song Dynasty, shedding light on the taste of civil officials of the late Joseon Period.
