Description

This certificate of designation as a meritorious subject was issued by the Gongsindogam (Government Office of Records for Meritorious Subjects) to Jang Cheol (1359-1399), a Grade-3 official at the Jungchuwon (Bureau of State Records), in November 1398 (the 7th year of the reign of King Taejo) in recognition of his role in suppressing the First Princes’ Rebellion (1398). He was one of twenty-nine people designated as meritorious retainers for their part in suppressing the rebellion. The certificate contains includes the following information written in standard Chinese classics characters and Idu script (an archaic writing system in which the Korean language was represented using Chinese characters): Jang’s name, the reason for his designation as a meritorious retainer at the order of the King, the nature of his meritorious act, his reward, and the date of effect of the certificate. The end of the document contains the names of the officials at the Gongsindogam and the Ministry of Personnel Administration responsible for issuing the certificate, their signatures, and the date of its issuance. The certificate is regarded as an important cultural material as it not only includes a detailed record of Jang Cheol’s meritorious deed and his reward but also provides valuable information about the organization and operation of the Gongsindogam. It is also regarded as a valuable resource for research on Idu and the official document system of that time, and has considerable historical, linguistic, and bibliographical value as it is the only surviving document to refer to the First Princes’ Rebellion.
