As a compilation of Buddha’s teachings, Mongsanhwasang beobeo yangnok (Sermons of Buddhist Monk Mongsan with Commentaries in Korean) provides guidance to monks in their spiritual development. This book was widely read in Korea during the Joseon Dynasty; it contains a selection of Buddhist teachings chosen specifically for Goryeo monks by Mongsan (Ch. Mengshan Deyi), a famous monk during the Yuan Dynasty, along with his own sermons. This particular version was translated into Hangeul and annotated by Sinmi of Joseon. Printed with woodblocks on mulberry paper, the book measures 30.8 cm long and 20 cm wide. Mengshan Deyi actively exchanged with Goryeo monks, maintaining particularly close ties with State Preceptors Hyegam and Bogam. Mengshan Deyi had a profound influence on Korean Buddhism; the Liuzu tanjing (Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch) he edited and his sermons had the largest circulation in Korea among works by a Chinese monk. According to the postscript written by Kim Su-on, this book was one of the Buddhist books published by Queen Dowager Insu in 1472 (third year of the reign of King Seongjong of the Joseon Dynasty). At that time, Queen Dowager Insu printed 29 types of Buddhist scriptures to pray for the souls of ancestors and healthy and long life of the king and the queen mother. Mongsanhwasang beobeo yangnok was printed in 200 copies. As a Hangeul-translated Buddhist publication from early Joseon, this book is a valuable material for research on the history of Korean Buddhism as well as the early Hunminjeongeum (Proper Sounds for the Instruction of the People).
