Description
The main idea of Hwaeomgyeong (Avatamsaka Sutra) is that Buddha and ordinary people are one rather than separate entities. In Korea, this sutra has served as a fundamental sutra for the Huayan Sect (Avata-saka Sect). This sutra, along with the Lotus Sutra, was one that wielded crucial influence on the establishment of Buddhist philosophy in Korea. This volume is part of the 120-volume of said sutra interpreted by Monk Cheng Guan of the Tang Dynasty of China and explained by Monk Jing Yuan of the Song Dynasty of China. It is a wood block-printed one on mulberry paper, foldable like a folding screen. When folded, it measures 32㎝ by 10.7㎝. This volume is presumed to be one of those printed out of the wood block sent by Monk Jing Yuan to Monk Uicheon during the Goryeo Period (918-1392). Thus, it is an important material that tells us about the exchanges made between prestigious monks of Goryeo and Song.
