Description

The Stupa of Sujongsa Temple is located next to the Main Hall of Sujongsa Temple, together with the Octagonal Five-Story Stone Pagoda (Treasure No. 1808) and the Three-Story Stone Pagoda. The sarira reliquary discovered in the process of dismantling the pagoda for repairs in 1939 has been designated as Treasure No. 259 and is currently kept at the Buddhist Central Museum in Seoul. The octagonal sarira pagoda stands 2.3 meters tall and consists of a roof stone and a stupa finial placed on a two-tiered platform. The Stupa of Sujongsa Temple is a well-preserved stone sarira pagoda composed of a foundation, platform, body, roof stone, and stupa finial. It is worthy of designation as a “Treasure” as there is a dated record of its construction, its decorative patterns are exquisite, and it was erected in memory of Princess Jeonghye (? – 1424), a daughter of King Taejong and one of his concubines, known only by her family name of Gwon.
