Description
The Stele for State Preceptor Jingak, consisting of a main stone and a roof stone erected on a square base, is located at the site of Changseongsa Temple. The main stone is badly defaced, and its left edge has been chipped off. The granite roof is characterized by gentle slopes. The inscription on the memorial stone contains a record of Jingak’s life and achievements. It states that Jingak became a monk at the age of 13, disciplined himself in several temples, oversaw the reparation of Buseoksa Temple, and died at Sobaeksan Mountain at the age of 76. The stele was erected at Changseongsa Temple on Gwanggyosan Mountain in 1386 (the 12th year of the reign of King U), one year after Jingak’s death. The stele displays the simple style of memorial stones of the late Goryeo period, and is comparable with the Stele for State Preceptor Daegak at Seonbongsa Temple, Chilgok (Treasure No. 251), the Stele for Buddhist Monk Bojejonja at Silleuksa Temple, Yeoju (Treasure No. 229), and the Stele for the Construction of Daejanggak Depositories of Silleuksa Temple, Yeoju (Treasure No. 230). The inscription, which was composed by Yi Saek and inscribed by the monk Hyejam, points to a general deterioration of general calligraphic style, and lacks the dignity of inscriptions of the early Goryeo Dynasty.
