Description
Nilakantha dharani is a scripture about the Dharani Sutra’s supernatural power to help people overcome ill fortune either by transcribing it into paper, by carrying a copy of it around with them, or by reciting it over and over again. According to the epilogue and the names of the people who took part in the work listed at the end of the book (which is kept at Myodeoksa Temple), it was carved and then printed in 1425 (the 7th year of the reign of King Sejong) as arranged by Yun Hui, a local administrator in Jangsa (present-day Gochang, Jeollabuk-do), Seokju, etc., to pray for the eternal repose of the spirits of deceased parents, offer blessings for them and their families, and pray for rebirth in paradise after death. Composed of three parts, it is a foldable book that is small enough to carry in one’s sleeve. A hitherto unknown woodblock-printed book of scriptures, it is worth preserving as a cultural heritage that provides valuable insights into Korean Buddhism, early Joseon society, and woodblock printing in the early Joseon period.
