Description

As a celadon jar dating back to the Goryeo Dynasty, it has height of 24.4 cm, mouth diameter of 11.5 cm, and base diameter of 11.5 cm. This spherical jar is decorated with three large lotus flowers on the top and bottom parts and magnificent scroll designs in between. The tip of the spout is slightly rolled outward, and the neck is short. It has a chubby waistline and a flat bottom. The outer lines of the designs are made big and straight using the semi-embossing technique, and the fine details are engraved exquisitely. Although it is a form of engraving, such semi-embossing technique makes the design stand out by carving out the surrounding area in large pieces. This specific technique was completed during the peak of the production skill for Goryeo celadon. The designs found on this jar are also made by the semi-embossing technique and of a combination of thin and thick engraved lines. There is hardly any crack found on the surface, which was coated with clear, gorgeous jade green glaze. It is rather unusual for Goryeo celadon to have an ample body like this spherical jar. The lotus flower and scroll designs engraved all around are extremely magnificent.
