Description

The Lead-glazed Pottery Jars with Stamped Design are two lidded ceramic jars, one large and the other small, made during Unified Silla in the 8th century. While it is not certain whether or not the two were intended to be used as the inner and outer containers, the form of the jars, decorative designs and manufacturing techniques suggest that both were made by the same potter and at the same workshop. The vessels were made of the clay of fine particles and coated with the lead glaze of green tone made by mixing lead oxide and copper oxide. The jars had the entire surface, including the mouth, stamped with the bands of different decorative patterns, creating visual diversity. The vessels are the largest and the most elaborately decorated among the lead-glazed creamation urns of Unified Silla and as such are regarded as an important source of knowledge about the production of lead-glazed pottery of Unified Silla. The vessels underwent damages around the mouth and base and had to be repaired at a later date. Despite the flaw, a comparison of the jars with other pottery vessels of the period shows that they are superior to others in terms of aesthetic and technical perfection, representing the outstanding achievment made by the potters of Unified Silla in the 8th century.
