Description
Simpyeon yuchwi daedong sirim is a seventy-volume anthology of poems by the country’s literati compiled by Yu Huiryeong (1480-1552), a civilian official during the reign of King Jungjong (r. 1506-1544) of Joseon. Seemingly an attempt to overcome the limitations of and surpass existing collections of literary works, it included works by members of the royal family, women, monks, and naturalized citizens, and spanned the ancient period to the Joseon dynasty. It is surmised that the books were printed with Byeongjaja, a movable metal type, circa 1542 (the 37th year of the reign of King Jungjong). The works display significant differences from the originals included in Dongmunseon, a collection of literary works, and each writer’s collection of his (or her) own works. As such, Sinpyeonyuchwi daedongsirim is considered an important material for scholars engaged in studies on the process of publication of literary anthologies during that period. Among the seventy volumes, volumes 9-11 and 31-39 are the only known parts of the collection. They are very precious materials as they were printed with the movable metal type called Byeongjaja, which was newly made based on Jachi Tonggam (Comprehensive Mirror to Aid in Government) by the Jujadogam (Typesetting Office) in 1516 (the 11th year of the reign of King Jungjong).
