Description

Hwaryeongjeon Hall was built in Suwon in 1801 to enshrine the portrait of the deceased King Jeongjo (1752-1800), who led the construction of the city of Hwaseong between 1793 and 1796. Along with Gyeonggijeon Hall in Jeonju, it is a rare example of a royal building being erected outside a palace. Its prestige was upheld by all the kings who came after King Jeongjo, as they paid homage to him there periodically. Unhangak Hall (main hall), Bokdogak (corridor), and Iancheong Hall for keeping the royal portrait temporarily are the main structures of Hwaryeongjeon Hall. Unhangak Hall and Iancheong Hall are placed at right angles, and the overall layout differs from that adopted in the early Joseon period, with the Iancheong Hall placed separately in a main hall with a “j”-shaped structure that was used to pay homage to the deceased king. As for the layout of the main hall, the portrait is placed at the center and flanked by two ondol-heated rooms, and there is a space for storing various articles at each end of the hall.
